Is professional photography worth the price, and why are some photographers more expensive than others?
Hey there! I wanted to take a moment to talk about something that comes up a lot in my work—photography pricing.
I totally get that professional photography can seem expensive, and it’s easy to wonder, why does it cost so much? After all, it's just pressing a button on a camera, right? Well, not quite! Let's talk about it!
I know that in today’s world, photography is more accessible than ever. Smartphones have great cameras, AI is advancing, and there are budget-friendly photographers offering their services. But pricing in photography—just like in any other industry—varies for a reason.
There are photographers who charge less because they’re just starting out, doing it as a hobby, or simply don’t value their work enough to price it accordingly. I’ve met so many talented photographers who should charge more, but hesitate because of imposter syndrome, or fear of losing clients.
For me, I see my photography as so much more — it’s my craft, my passion, and my business. I put my heart into every single session and every image I create. Years of learning, perfecting my posing techniques, mastering lighting, and developing a unique style contributes to what I offer. And if you appreciate that—thank you!
What Goes Into a Professional Photography Session?
A lot more than just an hour in the studio! There’s so much that happens before and after your session:
- Consultation & Planning – I take time to chat with you, understand your vision, and plan the session accordingly. Preparing props, lights, cleaning and warming up the studio before our session is necessary. Every client and every session is different.
- The Photoshoot – Creating a comfortable atmosphere, guiding you through poses, and making sure we capture the best version of you.
- Post-Production – Sorting through hundreds of images, carefully selecting the best ones, and editing them to perfection (this alone can take a full day or more!).
- Equipment & Maintenance – Professional cameras, lenses, lighting, editing software, memberships, website, hosting and of course studio rent—all of these have ongoing costs.
Where Do I Fit In?
Photography studios come in all shapes and sizes. Some have large teams handling marketing, shooting, editing, and sales—all of whom need to be paid. They may also have gorgeous, high-end studio spaces with higher rental costs. These factors all play a role in pricing.
I’m somewhere in between. I own a small, cozy studio—big enough for what I do, but intimate enough to create a relaxed, personal experience. In my space, I focus on crafting beautiful portraits that capture you and your loved ones in the best way possible. When you book a professional photography session with me, you’re not just paying for pictures—you’re buying an experience and investing in memories that last a life time. Whether it’s personal portraits, family moments, or branding for your business, professional photography ensures that you look and feel your absolute best!
Therefore please - look beyond just the price, and remember that like any other profession (beautician, hairdressing, home decoration,lawyer, plastic surgeon, tutor, you name it…) photography comes in different levels to suit different needs and budget.
